Let's Make Some Cabinet Cards With My Glass Negative Photos

Nigezza Creates aka Gez, Independent Stampin' Up® Demonstrator

Welcome to my blog, thank you for joining me today 😀

I have shared pictures of my wonderful recent purchase on social media and it is lovely that so many people were as excited as I was with it. Today I am bringing you the very first project I have made with it.  I printed 9 of the photos and made 8 journalling cards. Faux cabinet cards with journalling space on the back. I think they will look great in any vintage journal. I am completely in love with these pictures and really want to tell a story about them, I have been thinking about what their lives might have been like and what they were going to do in the future. So I am thinking of making a journal to show a version of their lives.

Finding Treasure

At the weekend while visiting my Father In Law in Alnwick I did my usual tour of the charity shops (of which there are many in the town) and the recently discovered Antique shop (no idea how I had not noticed that before my last visit). It was in the antique shop that I saw this lovely wooden box (I did see loads of other lovely things but they were beyond my budget) I do love a nice wooden box. I saw it fro a distance and I could see there were small things in grooves in it. My thoughts were that I could slot journalling cards I had made or other bits of ephemera while they waited to be put in a journal, so much nicer than the plastic box I currently use.  I took a closer look and saw that the things in the box were glass negatives.  I had never seen glass negatives before, I pulled a few out and held them up to the light & could see that they had people in them.  I thought that this was now going to be way out of my budget but it had no price on it. So I was brave and asked the woman in the shop how much it was as there was no price. I don't like doing this as I always feel embarrassed when I have to say no if the price is too high.  She checked and couldn't find the price so made a phone call and gave me the price that was well below what I thought it would be and I bought it. One happy bunny.

On Sunday night back home I set about trying to convert the negatives into photos, lots of googling and a few apps were downloaded. I converted a few on an app before it then asked for payment ... quick exit from that app!  The search continued on Monday and a free app was found and the light box I acquired last summer was finally put to good use.  I was actually shaking as each picture was revealed. I could not believe how lovely each photo was was. A few were damaged and some out of focus (although that may have been me shaking slightly! ) but most are pretty perfect. I have not done any work on cleaning up the photos yet, at the moment I am just enjoying them and actually quite like the defects in them, it adds to their charm.  I had 52 in total and printed off 9 to have a play.
